2008 Badger State Games: OHHHH So CLOSE! The 2008 games were again a good time. Thanks again to Marv Van Every for coordinating the over 40 team! The over 40 team came oh so close to winning their first gold. Strong performances by the entire team got us in the championship game against the Pumas. It was a rematch of our one pool play loss to the Pumas, which they won 1-0 on a controversial hand ball call inside the penalty area. That resulted, of course, in the lone goal on a penalty kick. We were ready for a rematch. We led most of the Championship game on a goal by TJ. He scored on a cross from the right side. TJ challenged the goalie for the ball. The goalie mishandled it. TJ used his hip, and pushed the ball, along with the goalie and himself, into the goal. It was a great aggressive play by TJ. The Pumas tied the game about 10 minutes later with a long shot from the left side. It was a long looping shot just out of the reach of our goalie. We finished regulation tied 1-1. Following regulation, we went to (2) 5 minute periods of extra time, with golden goal format. The Pumas won the toss, choosing to go with the wind for the first 5. The ball was in on our right end, with a Puma throw in. An unmarked Puma took the throw, and shot, with the wind, from about 40 yds. out. Again, a curling shot just out of our goalies outstretched arms. A disappointing end to an otherwise great tournament. There was also a co-ed team from Viterbo at the toruney. They lost in the bronze medal match. Thanks again to all participants, and I look forward to seeing you next year.

2007 Badger State Games: The 2007 Badger State games were, again, a success. Another good time was had by all. The over 40 team went into the 4 team tournament with high expectations. We had intended to make this year our year. With the addition of some key players, including Steve Daniels, we expected to improve on our last years Bronze medal. In line with our expectations, we won our first match 3-1 over the Pumas. Unfortunately during the game we lost Steve Daniels, our center back. We lost our next match 2-1 to eventual gold medalist Italian Ristorante team. It was a tight contest right up to the end with some missed opportunities by us. We look forward to a strong showing again in 2008. The men's open team did not advance to their medal round.

2006 Badger State Games: Again in 2006, a good time was had by all. The over 40 team took home the bronze medal (4 team pool). Again, Marv had a highlight goal in the Bronze medalist game. Again, from an impossible angle, he beat the goalie near post. Tim Hoch also had a goal for the final 2-1 winning margin. Sparta Copenhagen was our respective team in the open division. Out of a 6 team pool, they lost 2 games: first to the eventual gold medalist team (Racine Cosmos); and then to the bronze medalist (Whompy's Warriors).

2005 Badger State Games: The 2005 Badger State Games were again a big success. This year the over 40 Team stood out. The over 40 Team went 2-1 to place 2nd in their division. The highlight of the tournament was Marv's (see below) goal in the final game. We had a break down the right side. Just outside the goalie box. We had the box flooded with players to draw out the goalie. Marv rocketed a shot from an impossible angle to give us the 1-0 victory. All 3 games were close.
In the Open Division "Sunday FC" still fared well. They posted a 1-2-1 record. Their 2 losses came against the eventual champion and runnerup in the 12 team field. Both losses were a 1 goal differential.
It just goes to show that the La Crosse Area soccer talent can compete with the much larger metropolitan areas of Milwaukee and Madison (some of these players considered to be semi-pro).
Congratulations again to everyone, and I look forward to returning in 2006!

2004 Badger State games: The Club sent 3 teams to the Badger State Games. The Club sent an over 40 team, an over 30 team, and an open team. All 3 teams did well and placed in their respective divisions. The open team did exceptionally well, going to the Championship game. The open team made it to the finals with only 1 substitute. According to Simon Monks, the open team captain, "Our guys played their hearts out. Metien (the goalie) played awesome and kept us in all of the games". In fact, in the Championship Game against Milwaukee AUAC, La Crosse played the last 20 minutes of regulation minus 2 players. Regulation ended with a 0-0 tie. After 20 minutes of overtime, again 2 players short, the game still ended in 0-0 tie. It took a shoot-out to take down the La Crosse Open Club, and in the Championship game at that.

Congratulations to all the players at the Badger State Games!

Some History: The La Crosse Soccer Club is currently spearheaded by Marvin Van Every and Steven Daniel. The Club was founded in 1990 by Mark Hafernan. According to "Marv": "Mark started the club by putting out a memo in the newsletter at work (Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center of La Crosse), asking anyone interested in playing soccer to just show up". Mark has since moved, but Marv and Steve have carried the soccer club torch valiantly forward. Steve has been an active member for over 10 years (Steve renewed his interest in the sport when his 2 sons started playing). They have turned the adult Club from a 6 guy get together, into a league with over 100 active members. For this, the La Crosse area soccer players would like to say "Thank You!"

Hoch Insurance Services would like to Thank and Congratulate everyone who has been a part of The La Crosse Area Soccer Program...at ALL levels. Let's MAKE IT GREAT in 2008!
